A Tour of the English Lakes
D8. Derwentwater and Skiddaw from Lodore
Gray's Journal Entry: ‘On turning from viewing the Cataract of Lowdore, we had before us the charming view of Derwentwater, with Skiddaw for its backgrownd, which is delineated in the engraving. Below are the meadows of Lowdore, on which some groupes of cattle were grazing: beyond these, in the transparent lake, were the three wooded islands, St Herbert’s, Rampsholm, and Lord’s Island. On the distand shore appears Crossthwaite or Keswick church; and behind this Skiddaw reared his majestic head, on which we could distinctly see numerous patches of snow.’

Engraving: There was no original sketch of this scene in the Yale album, although an engraving after Farington appears in the 1816 volume. I have included this as it is interesting to see how accurately Skiddaw in the distance has been depicted in the engraving.

Location Hint: Climb up into the woods beside the Lodore Hotel to find this viewpoint. It appears that the lake came up much closer to Lodore Falls in Farington’s day.
